Westbound, Route 66 begins in Chicago, Illinois. One could easily spend a week traveling the 301 miles (484 km) of the Illinois portion because Illinois has more nostalgic places to visit than any other state on the Route. By 1956, Interstate Highway 55 replaced most of what was Route 66.
